You Were Right | laurenrecall's Blog

Dear Coach,

I know very little about football and less about coaching. I do however know that my child is a better man today, having played for you.

This boy never played a down before his Freshman year and to accomplish what he has, makes me very proud of the young man I call, Stinky. I am extremely grateful to you, your staff and his teammates for the education and support he has received, we have received.

I know my child. I know his ways. I saw a look of such pride and happiness when he removed his helmet last night. Openly expressing his joy is not his way. A void filled. He chose to fill a huge hole in his heart with determination to improve. Last night, that hard work paid off.

Coach, you helped him get there. He wanted, he needed, to prove to you, that you didn't waste your time, concern, energy. It is his way of saying thank you. He's not done. He'll give you everything he can to get you to the next level. I promise you, I will stand behind him and push as necessary.

I've hated you for three years.  I thought you were abusive. I could never verbalize these things to you, but I do believe I need to say them as much as you deserve to hear them.  I was wrong.  You were what he needed.

Congratulations and thank you, Coach. Thank you for helping me raise my beautiful boy. I'm very proud of the end product.

Sincerely,

Stinky's Mom

Are you going to tell him this?

He probably cried like a baby when he read it. ;-)

I can't speak to him. I get all tangled up. He intimidates the crap out of me so much I feel like a child. I suspect I do the same to him. We avoid one and other. That would probably hurt him to hear it, but it's how it is. I've hated him for putting Stinky through what he has. When Lumpy died, I saw a different person emerge from him. He stood along side Stinky the entire day of Lumpy's wake and hasn't taken his watchful eye off yet. Not any less demanding, but big brotherish. I cry being the observer knowing he is willing to give Stinky what I can't. Man making. It's a beautiful thing.

His coach sounds like wonderful man. Congratulations on the win also. What was the score?

He's a hard man to like but respecting got easier for me as I am seeing the end result of his hard ways shaping my child. Thanks, it was a wild night. 29-0 in their house.

Very insightful on your part. Most Moms undertsandably have a desire to protect and even smother after the family has suffered a loss. You were perceptive enough to see better. Well done.

Congratulations Lauren. It not only filled a void for your son, but it answered the question that you have had "Why are you being so abusive?". A learning curve for you as a mother. There are more steps for you to make through his growing up, and I'm sure you and Stinky will do just fine. Congratulations to both of you.
